Low-Earth Orbit Satellite Positioning System With Remotely Controlled On-Board Clocks

چکیده
In the present work a new concept of satellite-based navigation system, which does not require on-board atomic references, is presented. This novel concept consists of a constellation of compact low-earth orbit positioning satellites that are equipped with on-board steerable clocks, i.e. voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO). An appropriate ground-satellite synchronization network is responsible for keeping in lock step clocks on-board visible satellites with a master atomic reference located on the ground. Regional/local clock synchronization, low-weight satellites and low manufacturing cost are some of the peculiar aspects of this novel system. Key issues such as number and spatial location of required synchronization stations, clock de-synchronization issues and positioning accuracy are extensively discussed. A software simulator specifically developed for studying its feasibility is also presented together with a plan to develop a micro-satellite payload to demonstrate the feasibility of such system.

The remote synchronization system RESSOX is a novel concept for a GNSS time keeping system that does not require an on-board atomic clock. RESSOX has been presented as an alternative to the classic GPS scheme and was specifically designed for the Japanese augmentation system QZSS (Quasi-Zenith Satellite System). According to the RESSOX structure, QZSS satellites will carry light and inexpensive...
متن کاملTime and Frequency Measurements Using the Global Positioning System
GPS, well known as a versatile, global tool for positioning, has also become the primary system for distributing time and frequency. GPS receivers are fixtures in telecommunication networks, and calibration and testing laboratories. They make it possible to synchronize clocks and calibrate and control oscillators in any facility that can place an antenna outdoors for lineof-sight reception of t...
متن کاملAn assessment of relativistic effects for low Earth orbiters: the GRACE satellites
The GRACE mission consists of two identical satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of ∼500 km. Dual-frequency carrier-phase Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers are flying on both satellites. They are used for precise orbit determination and to time-tag the K-band ranging system used to measure changes in the distances between the two satellites. The satellites are also flying ultra-...
متن کاملThe Demise of Selective Availability and Implications for the International GPS Service
Early on May 2, 2000, selective availability (SA) the intentional dithering of clocks on GPS satellites was terminated. The amplitude of variations in transmitter clocks, formerly tens of meters, was reduced by orders of magnitude. These clocks are now much more predictable, with the possibility that the International GPS Service (IGS) can produce, in addition to real-time orbits, real-time clo...
متن کاملSatellite measurement of the Hannay angle
The concept of a measurement of the yet unevaluated Hannay angle, by means of an Earth-bound satellite, adiabatically driven by the Moon, is shown herein. Numerical estimates are given for the angles, the orbital displacements, the shortening of the orbital periods, for different altitudes. It is concluded that the Hannay effect is measurable in high Earth orbits, by means of atomic clocks, acc...
